Last night on the heels of the New Thor announcement, Chief Creative Officer of Marvel Entertainment Joe Quesada, appeared on The Colbert Report to announce another shake up to Marvel’s “Big Three”. Clearly we over at It’s All Geek to Me have some thoughts on the subject.
It has been rumored for sometime that Steve Rogers was (for some reason) going to be unable to continue as Captain America and someone else would have to take up the mantle. Which is a pretty common occurrence in the world of comics. There had also been much speculation that James “Bucky” Barnes, also known as The Winter Soldier, and played in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the adorably charismatic Sebastian Stan. However last night, Joe Quesada confirmed that the new Captain will be Sam Wilson, aka Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie in the MCU.
We knew it was coming. I ADORE Steve Rogers, I mean come on a gorgeous superhero with the manners/sensibilities of the 40’s, enough to make a girl go weak in the knees. I detest being referred to as “Ma’am”, I know it’s mostly a sign of respect, but over the years the meaning has come to be something more equated with age, so the running joke in my life has become that the only person allowed to call me “Ma’am” is Captain America, because a) in the 1940’s it actually was meant as a sign of respect and b) see earlier weak knees comment. Still I was well aware that we were getting closer to someone other than my beloved Steve being the Captain. When the idea of Bucky taking over was being bounced around I have to admit, I was totally ok with that. After all it’s already an accepted part of cannon, and it would mean once again we’d have a gorgeous, abit less clean cut, super hero with the manners/sensibilities of the ’40’s. After all Bucky and Steve were childhood friends and therefore possess similar morals, making for a pretty easy transition. However, this was not the direction that the PTB over at Marvel chose to go. Instead they choice to pass the proverbial torch to Sam Wilson aka Falcon, which is also part of cannon, btdubs.
You know what? As much as I LOVE me some Bucky, I say good on you Marvel. More and more we’ve started to see them branch out to more inclusive Super Heroes, which is AMAZING! Between the introduction of Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel, the announcement of the role of Thor being taken over by a woman and now Falcon taking over for Steve Rogers, we are starting to see more and more people being represented in the Marvel Universe, and not just as new or background characters, but as MAJOR characters. Hell, even giant tree beasts and talking racoons are getting brought into the spotlight.
I’m not generally a big fan of change, and while I do have some reservations on all the big shake ups, some of which I expressed in our post on New Thor, I’m still really excited. Keep up the good work Marvel!
