The Buffy Rewatch Project: Episode 2 “The Harvest”

The Buffy Rewatch Project: Episode 2 “The Harvest”

On March 10th, 1997  a little show aired on the WB that would ultimately change Pop Culture as we know it. Yes folks, I’m talking Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

After a tiny bit of insomnia, and a deep tidal wave of nostalgia, I’ve decided to start a rewatch of everyone’s favorite blonde badass to see how it stands the test of time, okay, maybe I just wanted an excuse to rewatch and share thoughts.

Spoilers obviously.

Episode: 102 “The Havest”

Air Date: March 10th, 1997

Plot: Buffy and her friends encounter a powerful vampire bent on opening a portal to a dimension inhabited by demons.

Highlights:

– This is the first time we get to see the “Scoobie Gang” in action. Willow shows off her hacking skills and Xander his (sometimes stupid) drive to come along and help in any way he can.
– Jesse. Yes I did mention him as a highlight last episode, but this is the last time I get to do it.I remember being devastated the first time I ever saw the episode at the big reveal. Although can we take a mo-mo to say that Vamp!Jesse, not VampedOut!Jesse, just Vamp!Jesse is kinda hot? The way he takes Cordelia onto the dance floor? Yum.

– Another tease of Angel to bookend the episode. Although, I am a little miffed at the fact that he just waits outside the Bronze and is like “By Golly, I think she’s done it!”
– Jesse’s death. It’s heartbreaking that it comes at the hand of Xander, but it is kind of fitting.

– We also get treated to at least two of the shots from the opening credits.
Fave Quote:
Giles to Buffy, Xander & Willow: “That was a bit British wasn’t it?”

And Baby Angel…just cause.

Does it Hold Up:

So it’s technically the second hour of the pilot, so on it’s own? Meh. But still a great episode. Jesse’s death perfectly sets up the fact that in The Whedonverse, NO ONE IS SAFE. As I mentioned earlier it also really starts to show the future Scooby-Gang dynamic.

On a whole, not the best episode, still enjoyable though.
