Though we don’t often think about it, let alone talk about it, music plays a large part in popular culture. It’s everywhere and no, I’m not talking about the OMG-Did-You-Hear-Taylor-Swift’s-New-Album, kind of everywhere. I’m talking about the music that punctuates tv and film. Sometimes the pairing is so perfect we don’t even register that it’s happening.
It’s no secret, to anyone paying attention, I have recently fallen down the K-Hole that is Supernatural, which is actually a stellar example of well used music. Click below to see my Top 5 Musical Moments of Supernatural.
FIVE
Song: Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves
Season 7 Episode 20 “The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo”
Reason: I stand by the fact that this is an AWESOME Character introduction. In a show full of doom and gloom, it’s nice to see a bright bubble moment on screen. And who doesn’t wanna bust out some dance moves on an elevator to this song?
FOUR
Song: (Don’t Fear) The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult
Season 1 Episode 12 “Faith”
Reason: This is pretty much our first introduction to Reapers, and this particular one is TERRIFYING. The way the scene blends the absolute terror the woman in the woods is feeling with the absolute joy of the man receiving the “miracle” is perfectly balanced by the song. And come on, if there was ever a song to play during a “reaping” this is it.
THREE
Song: Rooster by Alice in Chains
Season 2 Episode 19 “Folsom Prison Blues”
Reason: There is something so eery about the opening cords playing over the FBI storming the cemetery, thinking they are RIGHT BEHIND Sam & Dean. Full disclosure some of my favorite musical moments happen when the FBI is closing in on the Winchesters.
TWO
Song: Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple
Season 6 Episode 2 “Two and a Half Men”
Reason: The Impala is as much a part of Supernatural as any of the other characters. She has been there since the beginning and although there have been times when she has not appeared for reasons, whenever she reappears we are treated to a good old look at how beautiful of a car she really is. Even though the song has been used a few times on the show, the reemergence of Baby is my favorite use.
ONE
Song: Renegade By Styx
Season 2 Episode 12 “Nightshifter”
Reason: As I said before, I love it when the FBI is hot on the Winchester trail and this particular song perfectly captures just how screwed our boys really are.
These of course are all merely my humble opinion. So what do you guys think? Do you agree? Disagree? Any of your faves not make the list? Hot up the comments and let us know.
